Dr. Obianuju Obioha is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Trinity Health of New England. She specializes in the care of athletes, dancers, and active individuals of all ages, combining advanced procedural expertise with compassionate, patient-centered care.

Dr. Obioha’s clinical practice emphasizes both surgical and non-surgical management of musculoskeletal injuries. Her areas of expertise include:

Education & Training

Dr. Obioha earned her undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where she also played Division I collegiate rugby. Her experience as a student-athlete gives her a unique understanding of the athlete’s mindset and the intense desire to return to peak performance after injury.

She received her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a nationally recognized institution for clinical education and research.

She completed her orthopedic surgery residency at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago—one of the top-ranked orthopedic programs in the United States, consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report for excellence in joint care, sports medicine, and academic leadership.

Following residency, she pursued a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, the #1-ranked hospital for orthopedics in the nation. Her training at HSS focused on minimally invasive surgery, athlete care, and evidence-based rehabilitation techniques.

Team & Performance Medicine Experience

Dr. Obioha has served as an assistant team physician for a wide range of high-performance athletic and performing arts organizations, including:

Dr. Obioha is currently seeing patients at Trinity Health of New England’s locations in in Springfield, MA and in Enfield, CT. She welcomes referrals for orthopedic consultations, second opinions, and ongoing sports medicine care. She also serves as a team physician to the Springfield Thunderbirds in the American Hockey League and assists in the care of various teams for Westfield State University.
